Shayne Hall passed away in the early hours of Saturday 16 September 2006. He will be missed by his family and many friends. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Although
my journeys in life have brought me in contact with many inspiring people, my
devoted love and appreciation goes to my wife, Debbie. Her unwavering support
and endless faith in me as a person is the reason I have achieved more than mere
dreams alone could conjure. She is a wife, a lover, a best friend, a soul mate,
and our synchronous wavelength has carried us through some of the darkest storms
so that we may bathe in the sunlight of our ambitions. Secondly,
my sincerest gratitude goes to the specialists at the Royal Brisbane and
Women’s Hospital. Their relentless dedication has granted my life an extension
in dealing with my terminal illness. Without them, this book would still be just
a scattered pile of notes at the bottom of the drawer. And
lastly, to all those rare, unique souls who dare to look beyond the cages of
religious, political, and social conformities and stand with the courage of
being an individual. May you continue to tread your own path and discard the
leashes of conventional standards.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Shayne entered this world with a battle on his
hands. A family tragedy when he was a 12-week-old foetus resulted in his
undeveloped form being instilled with morphine thrice daily. Despite doctors
constantly advising a termination on medical grounds, his mother held strong to
her conviction that the expected stillborn infant would still be born alive. He
made it into this world one Sunday night against all odds. Coming from a family background of psychics and
clairvoyants, he began to walk a different path before he could walk on his own
two legs. Being drawn even deeper towards the mystical aspects of this world and
beyond, his curiosity continued uninfluenced throughout his younger years.
During the early 1980s he undertook training in the arcane arts; a hereditary
path that he practiced and eventually taught for the next two decades. He has published material on the supernatural,
appeared on national television, and spoken out critically against the
philosophies of New-Age religions that he sees as little more than
emotionally-driven eclectic fashion statements. A lifelong student of sciences, religion, theology
and history, among other things, Shayne in recent years has adopted a more
philosophical outlook on life and believes that any religious system, modern or
ancient, provides at best a security-blanket for those lacking the strength to
believe in themselves. Although terminal cancer has forced a new battle on
his hands, his attitudes and beliefs are no less different today than in the
past. To him, this world is but another step forward on a journey that he is
proud to call his own. REFLECTIONS The Musings of an Ordinary Soul By Shayne Hall INTRODUCTION As the title suggests, this is a collection of
sayings that reflect my observations and experiences throughout my life. Nearly
all of them are purely inspirational in that they manifest in my consciousness
in the most unpredictable manner. This happens whether I’m in a relaxed and
unfocused state, or whether I’m fully concentrating on some totally unrelated
task. But in any case, if I don’t record them immediately, they are gone
forever. What began as a random pile of various scribbles and
notes became a book for medical reasons. In November of 2005 I was diagnosed
with terminal cancer of the liver. The primary source was a small and
inconspicuous skin cancer excised from my scalp in the January of that same
year. Having a history of Basal Cell Carcinomas (what many
refer to as the common “garden variety” skin cancers), nothing more was
thought of it until the biopsy later revealed it to be a Merkel Cell Carcinoma.
This very rare form of skin cancer is the deadliest known, ranking even higher
than an aggressive melanoma. Many practitioners in the medical industry are
ignorant of Merkels, and as they don’t normally affect sufferers until the 60
– 70 age bracket, at 41 years of age I present a somewhat unique case. Some of the sayings in this book will raise
controversy in certain arenas, but I’ve always striven to give an open and
honest account of my interpretations of life and its intricacies, whether in
private or public. Likewise, I accept and believe that everyone should be free
to express their own thoughts and opinions. It is only when the shackles of
political correctness and other imposed censorships are cast aside can we
communicate on a natural level. Otherwise, we are forever bound to be herded
around the pens of religious, political and social agendas until we reach
stagnation. This continues to be the fate of many who are lulled into the
fashions of modern society. This book has no page numbers. It is written such
that it can be opened at any part and read as desired. Although dates are
included at the bottom of each page, the layout is not designed with a linear
pattern in mind. To me, many of these sayings have no contract with time– they
are as valid today as they were in the past and shall be in the future. I have stipulated in my Will that a percentage of
proceeds shall be donated to Merkel Cell Carcinoma research. Here in A
popular saying is that when
friends pass away, “we’ve
lost them”. Yet think about
the reasons why they were
your friends. If the friendship
was true, it’s all
the qualities about them that
exist beyond the mere physical
body. Those
qualities will forever be
part of our memories. As
such, we can never “lose them”.
They have merely taken another
step along their spiritual
journey and will forever
be with us. May 2006 A
see-saw is in balance
when neither
side is either
rising or falling. Yet
it was not designed
to be static. May 2006 A
sheep may choose to stray from
its flock and decide
to graze in a different
paddock. But
it is still a sheep. May 2006 Advice
can be given, but
the hand cannot
be taken. circa 1999 All
forgeries need an
original product upon
which to base
their imitations. Modern
religions are a
classic example. April 2005 An
adversary can often
teach you more about
yourself than your
closest friend. May 2006 A
person may embrace philosophies,
tenets, etc. which
are of great interest. But
this does not necessitate that
the person themself is interesting. September 2005 Ask
a blind man to
describe a rainbow. Then
ask a bishop to describe the origins and
blood-shedding history
of his own religion. The
two results will each
have their own limitations— the former by his sight, the latter by his pride. March 2006
